About the stud

Gerzanne Arabian Stud is situated in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island. Te Puke is within 30 minutes’ drive of Rotorua, the thermal tourist mecca of New Zealand, and a three-hour drive from Auckland.

Gerzanne Arabian Stud began 30 years ago in the very early days of Arabian Breeding in New Zealand with a Crabbet-bred stallion Zarife (Sala-Daralga) imported from Australia to put over our lovely pony mares.

Loving the temperament and grace of the Arabian horse the stud imported the purebred mare, Robinia(Shafreyn-Ruheym) with a filly foal at foot — Beenie, by Fabulous — and in foal to Sindh, from Mrs McLean’s Fenwick Stud in Australia.

Robinia foaled a filly foal Suumah, by Sindh. This was a wonderful female parcel when females were almost impossible to obtain. This became the start of purebred Arabian breeding for Gerzanne.

The stallion at this stage was Santarabia Shammar (Imp Au) (Sindh-Hamoonette) who later died in an accident.

The lure of owning an Egyptian Arabian became a reality when the stud looked further afield and imported from Lodge Farm, United Kingdom, the yearling colt Fakhr el Nil (Fakhr el Keil x Bint Jehan), who proved to be infertile. During this time of uncertainty while investigating the infertility problem at Newmarket, England the mares were bred to Gai Cadet (Imp US) (Gai Parada-Fiera) and Arabian Park Bandero (Imp Au) (Banderol-Silver Orbe), who both crossed well with them.

Kandahar Ibn Kazra (Shakhs-Kazra) the replacement stallion, produced strong boned sound horses but we were still not entirely happy. Kandahar Ibn Kazra was subsequently sold to a South Island syndicate headed by David Marshall of Christchurch.

A visit from Marion Richmond of Simeon Stud rekindled a dwindling passion and in 1988 imported the El Shaklan grandson, Simeon Shomer (Simeon Sa’ar-Simeon Shirli), who has more than fulfilled our dreams.

Needing a new stallion to breed to the Shomer daughters, we again looked to Simeon Stud, and at last the dream of owning a Straight Egyptian stallion became a reality with the importation of the four-month-old foal Simeon Shemini (Asfour-Simeon Shuala).

Three Straight Egyptian mares followed soon after and Gerzanne has become the first and only Straight Egyptian Stud in New Zealand.

Over these sometimes daunting years, Gerzanne has collected a beautiful band of broodmares by world class stallions, and offers a range of exceptional bloodlines.

We believe that through adversity has come our strength.
